Protection & Safety

A significant component of all FXBIS programmes is focused on reducing any forms of violence against women and children, specially human trafficking, child exploitation and gender-based violence, child labour, child marriages, children living under vulnerable circumstances and incidences of stigma and discrimination within its programme geographies. The ultimate objective is to create a safe, secure and protective environment for women and children.

We are focused on reducing any forms of violence against Protection and Safety strategy focuses on preventive measures through raising awareness among communities, building capacities among child protection actors within the society – community leaders, religious heads, and sensitizing and strengthening capacities of law enforcement agencies. FXBIS works with the local youth and adolescents, training them to be peer educators in order to build a cadre of' agents for change' within their own communities. Survivors of violence are assisted through immediate interventions of raid and rescue, medical assistance, psycho-social support, legal support and linking them with established support service systems for their restoration, rehabilitation and repatriation.

Achievements

  • FXBIS' Suraksha Prevention Programme was acknowledged among the best intervention models by UNWomen; our achievements were presented at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues held in 2013.
  • Project MUKTI was awarded one of the 20 'most promising projects' of 2017-18 by CauseBecause media.
  • Yet again, MUKTI received the best 'sustainable project' awardat the 7th Enabling North-East Award for 2019,towards achieving SDG#16 - Peace, Justice & Institution Building.
  • FXBIS was commissioned by the UNODC in 2015 to conduct a regional assessment of cross-border human trafficking between India, Bangladesh and Nepal.
  • 1945 police officials were trained in 2019 & '20 (till date). It was acknowledged and reported in 'Trafficking in Persons Report 2020', published by the US State Department.
  • FXBIS has trained over 20,000 stakeholders including law enforcement agencies, government officials, journalists, community leaders and other child protection actors, since inception.

Key Interventions

CHILDLINE 1098 in Gautam Budh Nagar district (Uttar Pradesh) and UKHRUL district (Manipur)

  • FXBIS has been the collaborative organization partner of Childline India Foundation, under Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) of Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India. CHILDLINE- 1098, a 24x7 free emergency helpline and outreach service for children in need of care and protection. It aims to reach out to every child in distress and ensure that their rights and protection are ensured by abiding the four C’s Model- Connect, Catalyze, Collaborate and Communicate. CHILDLINE not only provides direct services to children in distress but also works on prevention by raising awareness through outreach and open house activities informing the general public on the implementation of 1098 free phone service. In GB Nagar FXBIS is running the programme since 2011 while in Ukhrul it is functioning since 2019. Till now we have been able to reach out to more than 20,000 children directly through the helpline service in both GB Nagar and Ukhrul.

SAAMYA: Fostering Gender Sensitization Among Adolescent Boys To Catalyse Them as Agents of Change for Shaping an Equitable Society in Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh

  • FXBIS is implementing the project in Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh in the rural and slum setting of Mamura, Ghari Chaukhandi and Basai with support from DS Group. Launched in February, 2020, the project aims to foster sensitized boys for an equitable society. The project targets to work with children of Government schools and the communities at the mentioned areas within the age group of 8-12 years and train them to be change agents in restoring a gender equal space in society. The selection of the area was based on FXBIS CHILDLINE’s intervention where in 2019 around 95 cases were received from these three areas that included cases of Child marriage, child labour, Missing Children, Sexual Abuse, Lost and found children etc. This put forth the ongoing situation of gender based violence in the areas and hence the need felt for focused intervention to bring change in the areas.

Kalinga Fellowship

  • FXBIS along with Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bridge Institute, Ashoka, Prajwala created Kalinga Fellowship in 2017. This is a global fellowship of business leaders, government officials and civil society leaders which facilitates a transformational leadership model that will end globally sexual violence against women and children. The initiative is a concrete step toward designing a common and shared vision and a living example of converting the SDG blueprint “to go from the world we have, to the world we want to have”.

Urban Slum Intervention Programme in Noida (Uttar Pradesh)

  • Since 2010, FXBIS has been working in the slum community of JJ Colony, Sector 16, Gautam Budh Nagar district on access to quality education and protection and safety of the community’s children. FXBIS runs the Suraksha Education Centre (SEC) under its flagship ‘Suraksha Education Programme’ for these children, providing academic support to school-going slow learners and the school dropouts, through tutorial assistance and non-formal education at bridge classes. The project ensures that each child assisted by the SEC is mainstreamed to school. The children’s library motivates them to learn about the world and enhance language skills; the children have inculcated keenness for reading, story-telling and writing. The wonderful concept of “Wonderoom”, in collaboration with the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, has been providing platform since 6 years to express such creative talent and others like dance and theatre.

(2019-2023):

MUKTI: Anti-Child Trafficking Programme, PAN India

FXBIS has been implementing the Mukti project in the state of Manipur, West Bengal and Delhi to reduce the incidence of trafficking in persons for commercial sexual exploitation and Child Sexual Abuse in India. The purpose of the project is to reduce the incidence of trafficking in persons for commercial sexual exploitation, particularly of children, in 3 trafficking source states (Manipur and West Bengal) and 2 destination state (Goa and Delhi), India thereby intervening strategically in source, transit and destination with multi partners running the same programme. The comprehensive community-driven intervention aims to empower local communities, institutions, adolescents and district administration and build their capacities to effectively counter human trafficking and address child sexual abuse. Over its course of three years, the project reached out to more than 20,000 stakeholders including children through awareness generation, more than 5000 stakeholders including child protection actors and children through training and capacity building and advocacy, around 250 victims providing direct assistance through rescue, rehabilitation and repatriation services. The first phase of the project ended in December 2019 while Mukti II is being implemented since February 2020 in Manipur, West Bengal and Delhi with a more comprehensive implementation plan in Manipur by activating systems and structures and empowering them at the state level. Mukti II aims to reach out to over 1 lakh stakeholders till 2023.

(2007-2023):

Railway Children Programme in Jaipur (Rajasthan)

It is one of the oldest running programme of FXBIS since 2007. In Jaipur we have been running a Day Care Centre for children living at the railway platform of Jaipur Railway Station and its nearby premises extending to the streets and adjacent slums. At the Day Care Centre children come to receive care, eat, relax and sleep in a protective environment. They also receive non-formal education, medical- counseling-rehabilitation services and are engaged with recreational and learning activities. Children at the centre are mainstreamed to formal education and are admitted to Government schools too. Support classes and computer classes are provided to school going children. Life skills enhancement is one of the basic focus of the programme and training is provided to children. At present the centre caters to 35 children while has reached to around over 2000 families and children/adolescents at railway station, the adjacent slums and the nearby Government Schools.

(2012-2014):

Implementation Of A Programme Against Trafficking Of Women And Girls In India

FXBIS, in collaboration with UN Women started its first SURAKSHA programme in Ranchi district of Jharkhand. In Jharkhand, around 6500 villagers joined the Suraksha movement on preventing gender-based violence and trafficking, led by 326 peer leaders and adolescent girls. The Programme used a multidimensional approach to fight against gender-based violence by empowering young adolescents and women through trainings that linked long-term interventions with more immediately implementable actions. This approach helped reduce the number of internally trafficked women and girls through community participation and action of the peer leaders and vigilant committees comprising 132 members coming from the 10 target villages. The SURAKSHA programme was acknowledged as one of the best intervention models by UN Women, and its achievements were submitted to the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on UN Women’s Programmatic Initiatives in Support of the Implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2013-2014).
